EU announced multi-billion fund to boost research and innovation

The EU commissioner for research and innovation, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, announced on 19th July, the creation of a fund doted with nearly €6.4 billion to invest in research and development, as part of EU flagship initiative "Innovative Union" within the 2020 Strategy.

This package, which is announced to be the biggest ever, is covering a vast range of scientific disciplines, public policy areas and commercial sectors. This funding will support research and development to strengthen Europe competitiveness and help solve societal challenges such as climate change, energy and food security, health and an ageing population.
